William Zickos - An Operational Variable Quartet Version
This version of An Operational Variable is scored for four drum sets. Originally composed as a quintet (with the addition of a timpani part), this piece was often performed with a quartet by "absorbing" some of the timpani passages to various members of the ensemble. Both versions are extremely fun to play and big hits with the audience.
An Operational Variable has several unique features that make this ensemble unique. Player two's kit includes a set of bongos along with the standard four-piece kit. Additionally, the use of brushes and mallets by the players helps to create sonic variety during the piece. During the sixteen-note section of the piece, the four players create a compound melody across the toms that creates a huge amount of energy and excitement.
