OVERVIEW
The object of this book is to start from the very beginning and provide thorough systematic instruction that will enable a student to become a dependable drummer in either band or drum corps. It is the desire of the author to impress upon all drum students, that a drum is a musical instrument as well as a rhythm instrument, therefore it is absolutely essential to be able to read music, as well as to master time.
DESCRIPTION
To give you a brief idea of the contents, here are a few points, taken from the text. The most important feature of drumming, is time. You must know how to properly divide it, if you are to execute the many beats and rolls that are called for in drum parts. Drum beats must be measured to the tick of a watch, as your strokes and taps are all counted as you play, to the cadence of met 120.
To have a system of execution that does not contradict itself, will save you years of hard study. This system will show you one way to execute every beat and roll in perfect rhythm. The art of drumming is taken up in consecutive steps. When you learn to drum by note, you will take up the roll only after you have mastered the sixteenth notes. You use the single stroke in this book, and upon completion of your study, you will not have to guess at things, for you will know at sight, exactly how to execute any drum part you may be asked to read, for you never change your style of execution. Uniformity of motion is what the system teaches.
The Straight System teaches time and rhythm, all controlled by the right hand stroke, therefore, no contradictions. All beats and rolls are plainly marked, so that a beginner can easily learn, and a drummer can perfect his drumming.
