This extraordinarily rare method book represents the pedagogical legacy of one of Berlin's most influential percussion educators. Franz Krüger's comprehensive approach to timpani and snare drum instruction—along with exercises for xylophone and orchestra bells—captures the methods that shaped an entire generation of German percussionists.
Franz Krüger (1880-1940) occupied the highest echelons of Berlin's musical establishment. Born in Roßlau, he served as principal timpanist at the prestigious Berlin State Opera while simultaneously teaching at the State Academic Academy of Music in Berlin (now the University of the Arts) from 1921 until his unexpected death in 1940.
Krüger's influence extended far beyond his own performances. His students became the backbone of Berlin's orchestral percussion sections, including:
Berlin Philharmonic: Gerassimos Avgerinos (principal timpani), Hans Hansen, and Kurt Ulrich
Berlin State Opera: Walter Bender and Friedemann Habner (principal timpani at Municipal/German Opera)
Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra: Kurt Engel and Kurt Schiementz (both principal timpani), plus Fritz Reuter
Other Major Venues: Rudi Schreiber (Komische Oper) and Kurt Zerbe (Municipal Opera)
This remarkable roster demonstrates how Krüger's teaching shaped the sound of Berlin's orchestral landscape for decades.
The book exists thanks to the devotion of Kurt Ulrich, one of Krüger's Berlin Philharmonic students. When Krüger died suddenly in June 1940, Ulrich inherited both the responsibility and honor of compiling his teacher's complete pedagogical materials. As Ulrich wrote in his dedication: "Professor Krüger's wife entrusted me with the honorable task of compiling this exercise material. I set to work with great joy, as one of Professor Krüger's students, I could thereby pay a small tribute to our esteemed teacher."
This method book thus represents more than instructional material—it stands as a loving memorial to a master teacher, preserving techniques that might otherwise have been lost to history.
