TOUCH II is the second collection of rhythmic and musical reductions of passages from complete orchestral works. The rhythms, dynamics, articulations, phrase markings, expression markings, and even beam groupings are exactly as they appear in the score.

TOUCH II presents 25 additional etudes that broaden the range of playing experience needed bring them to life. This second collection deliberately spans a wider spectrum, from intermediate-level etudes that build confidence in interpretive choices, to more advanced pieces that challenge experienced performers to defend nuanced, personal musical decisions. This range ensures that percussionists at every stage of development can engage with the same core discipline: listening deeply, understanding musical intent, and translating that intent into their own expressive performance.

These etudes are a training ground for musical thinking. Each etude becomes a laboratory for musicianship, and the decisions of subtlety and nuance transfer to any piece of music a percussionist encounters. Gaining the ability to breathe personality into a written musical passage by making artistic decisions based on the consideration of all musical parameters is the intended purpose of TOUCH and now, TOUCH II

Play the etudes along with the scrolling video files on the TOUCH II Members Webpage. As you perform the etudes, listen closely and model what you hear in the orchestra. At times, you’ll be playing along with the strings, the woodwinds, or the brass; solo parts, section parts, or full tutti passages. You’ll be playing along with melodies, countermelodies, and other prominent voices. Interpretation of rhythmic timing, dynamics, articulations, phrasing, tonal color, rolls (density, hand speed, or particular technique used), and more, are all free for experimentation and examination. Determine how you might best be able to emulate all of the musicality you hear in the recordings.

When you purchase TOUCH II, you’ll immediately be invited to set up a password to gain access to the special TOUCH II Members Webpage on the VAP Media website. This page contains TOUCH II in two forms: a downloadable PDF file and a series of online videos for each etude. Your purchase entitles you to both versions of the book. You’ll find that each version has its own advantages. For example, you can add own markings to your downloaded PDF Edition. The special TOUCH II Member Webpage has scrolling videos of the etudes, thus avoiding page turns. Having both editions greatly increases how you can interact with the etudes.
