Breuer Grupp Norvo - Three Xylophone Books
From the library of David Harvey, the preeminent collector of marimba and xylophone history, comes a trio of hot xylophone breaks and choruses! Three amazing and unique books: Dave Grupp's 100 Jazz Breaks for Xylophone, Harry Breuer's Flash Breaks, and Red Norvo's All-American Modern Rhythm Choruses. All three are flawless originals, scanned at 600 dpi for perfect resolution.
Grupp's book was first published in 1926. He's not as well known as the other composers in this collection, but he served as timpanist and percussionist with Arturo Toscanini and the NBC Symphony, led his own orchestra, and recorded as a xylophone soloist for Columbia Records in the late 1920s. The breaks in his book are all just two measures long, but each has a unique rhythmic feel and melodic direction. They're presented in several different keys, and can easily be adapted to any key or harmonic progression.
Harry Breuer and Red Norvo are two composer/performers most percussionists already know well. But these particular books are far rarer than the rest of their catalogs. Like Grupp's book, Breuer's Flash Breaks are short breaks, organized by scalar material such as Whole Tone Breaks, Chromatic Breaks, and Blue Breaks. These, too, can be applied to any key center.
Norvo's three most famous compositions, Dance of the Octopus, Kindlin' Wood, and Breakfast Breakdown, are known worldwide, but his influence on modern rhythm styles runs just as deep. All-American Modern Rhythm Choruses captures the hallmarks of Norvo's style, which remain a benchmark for improvisation to this day.
